First willingness to talk, now the rejection: US President Donald Trump now excludes negotiations with Tehran. But according to the Iranian Security Council chief, there is no interest in talks with Washington anyway.
US President Donald Trump has ruled out talks with the Iranian leadership for the time being. “Their air defenses, air force, navy, and leadership are gone,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They want to talk. I said, “Too late!”
On Sunday – a day after the start of the massive US-Israeli air strikes in Iran – Trump had signaled a willingness to talk in principle. “They want to talk and I agreed to talk, so I’m going to talk to them,” the president said in a telephone interview with The Atlantic magazine, adding, “You should have done that sooner.”
Iran's influential Security Council chief, Ali Larijani, however, on Monday rejected any negotiations with the U.S. government. “We will not negotiate with the United States,” Larijani said in a statement. He dismissed media reports that Iranian officials had tried to start talks with Washington.
The U.S. and Israel had begun massive air strikes on Iran on Saturday morning. Among other things, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed. In response, Iran has been attacking Israel and U.S. military facilities in the Gulf region since Saturday.
Before the start of the war, the US and Iran had held indirect talks on Iran's nuclear program. However, no breakthrough had been achieved.
