n Greensboro shortly after crossing over from Alamance and Orange counties, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Timothy Leroy Durham, 58, of Hampton, Virginia, was charged with felony fleeing to elude, driving while impaired, simple possession of a schedule VI drug and multiple traffic offenses. The Hillsborough Police Department may also seek charges for hit-and-run, and Highway Patrol is considering additional charges in connection with an alleged attempt to crash into a patrol vehicle.
At 10:20 p.m. Sunday night, Hillsborough police initially responded to a hit-and-run, according to a news release. Officers found the suspect U-Haul on Interstate 40, near Exit 261. Police activated blue lights and sirens, but the driver did not pull over.
The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office managed to puncture the U-Haul’s front tires using stop sticks, but was unable to stop the truck. The driver reportedly kept going, driving “erratically with his hazard lights on.” Other agencies also deployed stop sticks until finally the sticks deployed by Guilford County deputies caused the driver’s side front and back tires to detach from the truck.
The truck came to a stop near U.S. 29 and Guilford College Road on the western side of the city, where deputies arrested Durham.
Investigators searched the truck and found a hatchet, 17 rounds of rifle ammunition, a black mask, a camo mask, pliers, gloves and drugs.
U-Haul had the truck towed away from the scene.
Durham received a $50,000 secured bond.
